Retired Congressman Duncan Lee Hunter
Duncan Lee Hunter (Republican) served in the House of Representatives from January 3, 1981 (the 97th Congress) to January 3, 2009 (end of the 110th Congress). Congressman Hunter did not seek re-election after serving in the 110th Congress.
While serving in Congress, Hunter served as the Chair of the very important House Armed Services Committee from 2003 to 2007 (during the 108th and 109th Congress). Hunter was born in Riverside, CA on May 31, 1948, graduated from Rubidoux High School, Riverside, CA. in 1966 and received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Western State University, San Diego, CA in 1968.
Hunter served in the United States Army Airborne from 1969-1971 and later received his J.D. from Western State University, San Diego, CA. in 1976. Before he was elected to Congress, Hunter was a lawyer in private practice. Congressman Hunter was an unsuccessful candidate for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008.
Duncan L. Hunter is married to Lynne, and they are the parents of two sons, Duncan D. Hunter and Samuel Hunter, and are also very proud grandparents. (In January 2009, Duncan D. Hunter succeeded his father as Representative of the 52nd District for the 111th Congress.) Hunter is the author of “Victory in Iraq”. BGen. Terry Paul USMC (Ret.) made the following comments about Congressman Hunter’s book:
“As the Chairman of the Armed Services Committee in the House of Representatives for most of the Iraq War, Duncan L. Hunter not only participated in the major debates in Congress concerning the war… he led them, keeping the mission on track when others sought to derail it. His work to provide equipment and force protection to our troops was unequaled. Hunter knows the story of the Iraq War from the inside like no one else. He provides a clear, accurate portrayal of the war, well researched and documented – superb, exciting reading. His detailed accounts of heroism bring to the front the courage of American warriors.”
